The Buckley School has a long tradition of triumphant athletic teams that dates back to the 1920's. We believe that team sports and physical education offer invaluable lessons on teamwork, skill development, fitness and sportsmanship - all of which translate to the classroom and to life. The athletic program strives to develop a program where students can learn to work together and to respect their teammates and opponents in victory or defeat. Many important principles are learned through the experience of healthy competition while putting forth one's best effort. The program emphasizes team spirit, work ethic, sportsmanship, leadership, and pride in one's school and oneself.
The sports program also teaches boys about the importance of physical fitness and the advantages of staying fit. In the Middle and Upper Schools, boys participate in a strength and physical fitness program to improve skills, prevent injuries and to build a solid foundation for the future. The boys are taught the correct methods of weight training on our two universal machines.
The Hubball Building, a fully equipped complex with four gymnasiums, is used for indoor activities. In the fall and spring, the sports program uses several acres of athletic fields on Ward's Island.
